List of my TOP tango dancers and maestros and links to some videos of them
(to recommend for tango watchers and students)
The propose of this list:
Is to help the people who do not know about tango to watch the best tango dancers (in my criteria) and also I included my own teachers. As I say to my students, start watching only the best dancers as you will learn by watching (as the good like the bad ones). They have different styles but all are excellent dancers. Some of the performances you will see are choreographies (every step pre-programmed) and other are improvised (without previous preparation). But all enjoyable.
The first 3 of the list are my favorite tango dance couples and also teachers:
All have domain in improvisation and choreographies, tango salon and tango on stage.
My teachers and my recommendations to tango students:
I am learning with my most appreciated teachers Gustavo Naveira and Chicho Frumboli since I discover them in 2000 until today, so I can recommend to try some lesson with them. I had not the chance to learn intensively with Sebastian Arce and Mariana Montes but they are among my favorite teachers too. I also have learned a lot with Julio Balmaceda another great teacher. You can take more profit of them if you already have a solid base of tango first. In my case I started with them after 5 years of dancing and learning with others, so was the right moment for me to meet them.
What to look in the dancers to say I like them, how to recognize a good dancer?
Is not necessary that all the characteristics are perfectly executed in the same couple, but if some of them are there, I would be happy to watch. Should be certain balance and may be one of them specially better qualifyed to be remarkable.
- organicity and softness (should be easy for them and look relaxed, look cmnfortable, no-stress)
- musicality (dancing interpreting the music)
- dynamics (movement, pauses, changes of speed, fluidity)
- elegance and sensuality (position of the body, legs and feet, lines, posture, technique stuff)
- originality (having their own style and identity, creating their own movements and combinations)
- confidence (or mastery, in every movement)
- dancing with their souls and hearts with passion (more than just executing). When the dance comes from inside.
- using variety of the tango elements (ganchos, boleos, colgadas, volcadas, enrosques, changes of weight, using the space, etc).
- They are having fun and enjoying of dancing
- foot work and speed (hability and presition)
- embrace (for me if they keep a closed embrace is nicer, but the capacity to work with both embraces is the optimal), being close is nice, tenderness is nice, love is nice, etc.
- Improvisation: I prefer if a dancer is good improvising and not just if is good when is performing a choreography. A performance for me has more value if is improvised as it is the scence of tango.
- if the performance is a choreography, I look that everythicng listed should be well executed (musicality and organicity as the first factors and also the artistic factor). Even if all is pre-setted, should be organic: leader leading and follower following, action and reaction as should be improvising. Should look like if they were improvising (for the connection).
- balanced couple (leader and follower both has good connection and both give at the same level)
- At last, I ask myself: If I would be able to dance like them, I would enjoy of doing it ?
- Personally I do not like acrobacy (risky movements when woman is jumping or going to the floor), as makes me tense just watching. But some people like to evaluate also that.
From every couple you could find more performances in youtube by searching their names.
